Grate Crate was created by Daris Johnson in 2023 as a means to provide value to friends and family. After spending many years in the Service and Hospitality industries, Daris realized that he could cultivate the perfect gift box for enjoyment. The name grate crate comes from the word grateful as well as being a play on words for great.

The initial idea was to provide the goods in a box that was more than just "ready to be recycled." Too often, gifts have been given with no consideration for the packaging or containers. Grate Crate is a solution to this, where one can be in awe of the container as well as the goods. We hope to provide a crate so unique that the recipient will be eager to display the crate in their home.
The company began in Daris’ Madison Heights garage where he experimented with a method of staining wood. After the wood stain was perfected, it was then time to move on to find suppliers for the goods in the box. The goal was to have an entirely local Michigan crate. It was understood that a lot of these crates will be shipped out of state, and thus it is important to show off what Michigan can offer!
As of today, the Original Crate is all Michigan made except for the Petit Toasts.
